This beautiful vacation rental property is truly one of a kind in Taos, New Mexico and perhaps anywhere. The main house is a wonderful, authentic old adobe home set on two pastoral acres on a country road. The home is surrounded by trees, lawns and lush gardens, and is situated just across the road from the Rio Pueblo. This Taos vacation rental has a remote and private feel and yet is less than two minutes from the Historic Taos Plaza, and 30 minutes from world class skiing in the Taos Ski Valley.
Here you are entertained by stars and coyote choruses at night, roosters and the neighbor's donkey in the morning, and birdsongs galore all day long.
This beautiful vacation rental's decor is the true essence of the authentic Southwest. The plaster walls were hand rubbed to a soft buttermilk/beeswax sheen. Dark beamed ceilings and wood floors throughout are complimented by antique furnishings, native rugs and original art with many amazing and creative touches. This charming and cozy vacation rental home is perfect for a couple, although it does have a second bedroom with its own private bath.
Enter through the patio and covered portal into a kitchen fully equipped for all your cooking needs. The living room is warm and inviting. The gas stove in the corner provides heat, but the wood burning kiva fireplace sets the mood. Ample firewood is located in a wood box just outside the kitchen door.
There is an extensive DVD library and numerous CDs all you need for a quiet evening in your own Taos home. In fact, most guests spend more time here relaxing than they do out adventuring! The master bedroom has a kiva fireplace as well, with a queen size, antique brass and iron bed with down comforters, lots of pillows, and good bedside reading lights. The large walk-in closet opens to a hot tub under an 80' elm tree. There are two full bathrooms in the home. One has a deep tub and an array of candles. The second bedroom has a double antique iron bed and original art.
The outdoor patio is furnished with teak garden furniture, a fireplace and BBQ grill. The yard is enchanting year-round, even in winter. Towering cottonwood trees line one side of the property above numerous outbuildings. There is a spacious lawn and an orchard of mature apple, apricot, plum and pear trees. The many garden beds were lovingly planted by myself (a professional landscaper) and are surrounded by many tall trees and a flowing acequia.
This special vacation property was once the home of Taos writer John Nichols of The Milagro Beanfield War fame. The New Mexico Triology, of which the Milagro Beanfield War is a part, was written in what is now the property's two room guest casita, which is also available for extra guests. This property is described in great detail in virtually all of John's books both fiction as well as non fiction. John is a friend and still lives nearby.
There are fun and fanciful touches throughout the property to delight and surprise, from the turquoise Willys planter truck in the front pasture to the Mardi Gras beads flung in the trees, the whimsical gardens and outdoor art everywhere. The two story tree house in the orchard is so special, the greenhouse is an oasis in the winter and the 1971 Airstream in the back pasture is a great getaway spot. The Airstream trailer and tree house each sleep three, and are also available for additional guests.
In keeping with its Gemini owner, this vacation property has two very different aspects. It is a cozy retreat for one or two couples or a possible summer compound which can sleep up to 15 guests and is perfect for small weddings, reunions or retreats with its numerous private (and fun!) accommodations. (Please contact me for summer group rates and details. I can also provide meals for groups.)
This special home and property has been featured in Enchanted Homes, New Mexico Magazine and Green New Mexico. It was also featured on the Taos Home and Garden Tour.
This beautiful Taos vacation rental property must be seen to be believed. It is truly magical.

"We recently spent a wonderful week at Melissa's magical home. The decor and attention to detail was amazing, the gardens beyond spectacular, and I won't forget the afternoon spent in the tree house! We meant to be tourists and do and see all, but instead spent most of our time relaxing and re- fueling. I know we will return to enjoy Melissa's style, hospitality and magical sense of whimsy." ~ Cindy from Wisconsin
